Diana Nyad - Who hold the world record for longs Open Water Swim.

What Does It Take To Be A Great Teammate?

January 04, 2017 by Kevin Koch in Fuel

In Carol Dwecks book 'Mindset' she tells the story of Diana Nyad - the women who holds the record for Open Water Swimming. The record was 60 miles and she ended up swimming 102.5 miles. Although swimming seems to be an individual sport - she had 51 people to help her accomplish this amazing feat. She had numerous amounts of trainers, divers, and guides on the day she broke the record. Her name is forever in the record book but she couldn't have won if it wasn't for all the help she received.

You will never reach your full potential without tapping into the knowledge of others. Without great teamwork, you can never reach your ultimate dedication. You can never reach your dreams and you certainly can't help anyone reach theirs. Teamwork is the foundation of successful businesses, sports teams, relationships, and families. Teamwork is everywhere we go and it's something we often forget. We are so focused on the finish line but we lose focus that building something great happens off teamwork.

You can't achieve anything great alone, so find great teammates.

What are the top 3 qualities that you would want in a teammate?
  • Id be willing to guess you told yourself that great teammates possess great commitment, hard work, and trust.

Are you the teammate you want?

  • If you want your teammates to be committed, your commitment level needs to higher than anyone else's.
  • If you want your teammates to be trustworthy, your integrity needs to be flawless.
  • If you want your teammates to work extremely hard, you need to be the hardest worker in the room.
Be the teammate that you want.

Surround yourself with great teammates

Don't let one bad teammate into your group as they can progressively become a cancer with a negative attitude and poor judgement. The information we attain such as; resources, ideas, encouragement, and opportunities come from other poeple. Focus on surrounding yourself with people who heighten these. Success and achievement come from collective thoughts, not just a single brain.

I'm sure you have heard that the 5 people you spend your most time with will ultimately be a reflection of who you are and how you love your life. Are you a good reflection to your friends, family, and coworkers?

Being a great teammate isn't just about producing results, it's about putting your team ahead of yourself. Being a great teammate is not just about your sport or hobby, it's about being a great teammate for your spouse, your coworker, your friend, your brother, and your neighbor.
